Decorating a kitchen should be fun. You should end up with a room that appeals to you aesthetically as well as one that's functional. There are certain things you need in a kitchen, but don't ignore your list of wants, either. Even if a piece seems unnecessary, if you have the room and can make it work there's no reason you can have it on your wish list.
The basics are different with eat-in kitchens. You'll need some sort of table and chairs, or a big enough breakfast nook for the whole family. Many people find that these work well for all the meals and it gives them seating and a place to eat that's not out in the middle of the floor. For kitchens that aren't designed to be eat-in, then you have option of having kitchen island furniture installed where people may be able to eat. Or you can use it purely for prep, cooking and/or clean up.
Bar Stools Kitchen Counter
You'll want to look at your existing cabinets and countertops when choosing and island to make sure it blends in. And you'll also want to consider the size of the kitchen. Will it, or the kitchen stools around it if you choose to have some, be in the way so that people can't easily walk through, or open doors from things like a cabinet, refrigerator, stove or dishwasher? If it would be in the way of any of these things, you'll need a smaller island or a movable kitchen trolley instead.
Whether or not you have an island, you might invest in some kitchen bar stools that can be used next to a countertop or bar. If you're buying stools for an island, they'll probably need to be around 25 inches tall to be comfortable. Kitchen bar stools should be about 30 inches high, because bar countertops are set higher than island tops. Measure before you purchase and choose stools that are about 10 to 12 inches shorter than the counter where you'll use them.
A microwave cart is an option if you want to get your microwave off the regular countertop, and also offers a bit more storage space beneath. And for extra storage and display, you have a whole host of options. Baker's racks, buffets, sideboards and hutches are also designed to provide storage. They also make a great place to display serving pieces or knick-knacks. You don't have to have them, but if you want them, there's no reason not to indulge in this pretty kitchen furniture.
